Curiosities of a Scholar IV

On my way through Great Tiger Pass, I met a strange old man. He pointed at the three-forked path and said that he had encountered a tiger on one of the three paths. He proposed a bet, promising great fortune if I could discern the path where he'd met the tiger. I chose the middle path. The old man then said, "There was no tiger on the left.
