Can't Even Trust My Own Eyes

Hallucinations, Illusions, and Trickery of Light
I heard from a merchant that north of Valencia City lies a gigantic crater. My curiosity got the better of me so I set off to traverse through the desert, just so I could see the crater myself.
Exhausted by the scorching heat and nearing the point of losing my wits, I saw an oasis not too far away. I yearned to be there and throw my body into the refreshing water.
I mustered the energy to move my feet, counting my steps one-two, one-two, just to distract myself from my exhaustion. Yet when I got there, all there was sand. Was this some kind of cruel, divine trick?
The thought that this was how I'd meet my end, far away and alone on foreign land, made me not want to give up. I soldiered onward until I came upon a real oasis. I quenched my thirst like a madman, then sprawled on the ground in relief.
I can now let my mind wander back to the mystery of the false oasis. How did the desert play such a trick on my eyes?
