Three Days of Darkness to cover his own no-good tracks.

I'm sorry for pulling you into this dispute between
old men, but to get to the bottom of this you must speak to Mevo.
I've no doubt that back-stabber will deny everything, though.
There must be a connection between the dark energy and
the Black Crystals we found.
There may even be a link to this witch you're looking for.
So... I assume you'll be on your way? You'll find Mevo in Altinova,
selling his inferior weapons and armor. Oh! And thank you. I owe you
