We have to burn the Cron Period Journal at the well, so let's distract the soldiers by hiding behind the barracks and scream of a Goblin attack.

Like Beedle NPC Knowledge said, let's play with fire. Set a tent alight to create chaos among the soldiers.
Then burn this book over the well. Igniting the reagent should manifest the spirits.
But...ah. Such a waste. Such a precious reagent wasted on this!
