Borf insists he came here by accident and avoids talk of what kind of accident that was. According to some of his acquaintances, he had a problem with gambling and owed a lot of money he couldn't pay back, so his angry creditors kidnapped him and threw him into the ocean. A Shai girl who follows him around saved him from drowning and took him to Ostra Island.

It looks like he is trying to escape the island but also knows it would be dangerous for him to go back, so he isn't particularly driven to do so.
