That area is full of Barbarians.
They captured everyone here, including the villagers, and brought them there.
We hear things about them through the mercenaries passing by.

overturned the lands of Mediah.
Mediah's Lava Cave and Iron Mine were closed 
due to the incidents involving the Barbarians...
The Barbarians had crossed the highlands and desert 
and began living here around that time.
