Chapter 1: The Baby with Wings

A poor couple living in the mountains of Mount Ahshi had a child. However, neither a knife nor a sickle was able to cut the umbilical cord. For three days and nights, the couple worried about what to do. An old woman passing through the mountains heard of their story, broke off a reed, and with a swift motion, was able to cut the cord at last. The couple named the baby Uturi and raised him with great care.

Uturi was a strange child. If they left him lying in the room for a moment, when they returned he would be on a high shelf or on top of wardrobe, places impossible for a baby to reach. Curious, the couple examined Uturi's body and, to their surprise, found small wings under his armpits.

According to the legends of Mount Ahshi, a baby born with wings under their armpits would grow up to be a hero who saves the country. Fearing the king might hear of this, the couple hid deeper in the mountains. But the rumor spread faster than lightening, eventually reached the ears of King Jeongmyeong.

King Jeongmyeong, delighted by the prospect of a new toy, ordered Uturi to be captured. However, clever Uturi sensed the danger and disappeared.

Instead, the soldiers captured Uturi's parents. They tortured the couple, demanding to know Uturi's whereabouts. But the couple who truly knew nothing, was unable to provide any answers.

After several days, the couple was finally released and returned to their home in the mountains. They found Uturi waiting for them there, crying.
