Chapter 1: The Three Women
In the Land of the Morning Light, Seoul. On a day when both the sun and moon bowed their heads, twin girls were born into the Bae family. Their father, Bae Muryong, deemed the twins ominous and ordered them to be raised in a secluded room, away from prying eyes. The mother pleaded that it was too harsh, but Bae Muryong turned a deaf ear.
"Twins born on such an ominous date! An ill omen. Move them to the back room!"
"My husband... I don't understand... How can you be so cruel to newborns?"
"Husband...? Have you no shame? Even after the fall of your family? If you're so concerned, I can arrange for you to join them."
Though the three women were confined to a small room, they were happy to have each other. The mother, who had dreamt of receiving roses and lotus flowers as gifts, gave her daughters the beautiful names Janghwa and Hongryeon.
"Janghwa, Hongryeon, isn't this place a bit stuffy?"
"Huh? Not at all! Mother and Hongryeon are here with me!"
"Me too! Outside, everyone stares at us. It's scarier out there!"
"Haha, yes... I feel the same, my dears."
The three women spent their days surrounded by the flowers and grass in the garden.
